24 The Assessment of Balance Principle
Application in Sustainability
Reporting Practices

EXTENDED ABSTRACT
PURPOSE
The purpose of this study is to learn how to apply the principle of balance in sustainability reporting. Also, this study
aims to analyze trends in conformity with the application of the principle of balance in sustainability reporting in
Indonesia based on GRI Standards and Global Reporting Initiative work agreements.
STUDY DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH
This research was conducted on 101 companies in Indonesia which are divided into 8 different industrial sectors
(Construction, Food Processing, Financial Services, Mining & Metals, Industry, Oil & Gas, Electricity, and Airports). This
study uses quantitative and content analysis methods to analyze data samples.
FINDINGS
From the results of the study, it was found that companies express positive performance on sustainability reports to
minimize or avoid negative issues related to their performance. Some companies are also known to only reveal positive
aspects such as achievements, future plans, & various programs in the company.
ORIGINALITY/VALUE
This research contributes to helping stakeholders in making decisions by considering one aspect that might not have
been addressed so far, that is the balance aspect in the sustainability report.
